How Long Do Implants Last?

How long do implants last?

It is the most curious question and one to which there is no definitive answer. As istanbuldent®, we would like to tell you all the facts about this subject.

Patients who have lost teeth have several alternatives to replace their missing teeth, the most common and popular of which in recent years is the implant dental procedure. Other options include dental bridges and removable dentures. However, of all the options available, dental implants are the most comfortable, reliable and aesthetically viable solution.

What makes dental implants different?

Dental implants are now considered the best treatment option for tooth loss. Implants allow patients to chew like a realistic tooth. After the implant is placed, it will function as a tooth root. The titanium screw adheres to the jawbone during the osseointegration period. This ensures the structural integrity of the implant.

Is implant quality important?

The biggest variable for implant success is the quality of the dental implant. Much cheaper imitations on the market unfortunately cause problems. It is difficult for the patient to understand that they only have one option to determine the quality of the implant material permanently applied in their jaw. It is wise to make a good investment from the beginning to avoid unwanted results in the future.

How long do dental implants last?

There are some factors that affect the lifespan of implants. I have tried to include the prominent ones below.

Suitability of the patient to be implanted for the procedure

Adequate hard tissue support is required for the implants to attach. This is a result of the implant fusing with the jawbone (osseointegration). Therefore, the patient must have enough bone in the jaw to support the implant. Patients who have suffered some bone loss in addition to losing teeth should undergo careful evaluations by dental surgeons to determine the suitability of implants. Mini implants or short implants are not a foreseeable compromise for insufficient bone.
In cases where patients do not have enough bone to support implants, bone regeneration should be completed first.

Poorly placed implants

Poorly placed implants can lead to failure of the implant and therefore it is important to have it looked after by someone who has placed hundreds or preferably thousands of implants. Experience and training are really important in this field.

Gum diseases

Implant success: Conditions that cause tooth loss, such as tooth decay or gum disease, can also cause implant tooth problems. Therefore, patients should be careful with their oral hygiene after implant surgery.
Tooth wear: Conditions such as clenching or grinding (bruxism) can put excessive stress on the implants and cause them to fail.

Lifestyle

Various lifestyle factors such as quitting smoking, having uncontrolled diabetes and taking Selective Serotonin reuptake inhibitors also affect the lifespan of dental implants. Proper care of implants may require small changes in your lifestyle.

The Lifespan of the Implant is in Your Hands!

Implants can last for decades if properly planned and executed. If you are unsure how to care for your implants, your on-site dentist can help you. Multiple research studies of single tooth implants from the 1990s proved that in more than 95% of patients, the implant lifespan lasted at least ten years. The same results have been shown in numerous studies for full jaw implant work: Overdentures, teeth in one day, hybrid dentures, immediate loading of implants and fixed full bridges are the types of dentures that can be used for different periods of time.
