The History of Dental Implants

While implant teeth are a dental treatment method that has become increasingly popular in our country, especially in the last 10-20 years, used as an artificial tooth root in tooth loss, the history of implant teeth dates back to the 6th century BC. It is thought that the Mayan civilization was the first to apply implants shaped like teeth, similar to the dental implants used today.

In the Mayan, Chinese (4000 years ago) and Ancient Egyptian (2000 years ago) civilizations, special stones, seashells, animal tusks (especially elephant tusks), dead human teeth were used instead of implants made of titanium material like today. More recently, a metal screw was found in the jaw of a 2000-year-old skeleton in Europe. In many different parts of the world, archaeologists are unearthing similar dentalsolutions that form the basis of modern implants. Therefore, implant tooth roots, which are considered to be very new today, have been realized using different materials for people who have lost teeth in the past.

Dental crowns on implants have been used in the past

Today, while implants serve as artificial tooth roots, different materials are used for the upper part of the tooth. Metal-supported porcelains, or zirconium, empress full porcelain upper tooth crowns (crown part of the tooth) are used. Looking at the primitive implant dental treatments used in history, it is seen that primitive implants were also covered with dental stones. It is seen that these primitive implant dental applications were very permanent and successful (the implanted tooth remained in the mouth of the person until death). Of course, with the technologies of the day, it is a matter of curiosity with which surgical methods and pain management techniques the implant roots were placed in the jawbone. Primitive dentistry, which is advanced enough to apply implants in tooth loss, must have found a reasonable solution for pain management.

Before Titanium Implants, Different Metals Were Used

Implants, which are now made of titanium materials, were made using different metals such as stainless steel and lead until recently. In the modern era, the first dental implant protected by a patent was the implant designed by Greenfield in the USA in 1908 from irridio-platinum material. In 1939, Strock patented the chromium-cobalt mixed dental implant.

Implant Teeth Are Not New, They Are A Dental Treatment Developed Throughout History

Implants have continued to develop in many different materials and forms until today, and today they are mostly used as artificial tooth roots. Implants have been used and developed throughout history, although not in their current form.
