Complete Dentures and Implant Prostheses

When teeth in the mouth are lost due to reasons such as gum disease or decay, if there are no teeth left, it may be necessary to use full dentures. Total prostheses (complete dentures) are applied to fill the gaps of extracted teeth and to meet basic needs such as eating, speaking and aesthetics. Today, complete dentures do not find much use with the widespread use of implant treatment.

How are Implant Dental Veneers/Bridge/Prosthesis Made?

Used for 100 years as a solution for completely toothless mouths, full dentures cannot be very comfortable because they cannot provide retention in the mouth. Especially when the bone volume required for the retention of the prosthesis is not available, the prosthesis can become dislodged during eating or even speaking. A displaced denture puts pressure on the oral mucosa and can cause mouth sores.

Full Denture Acclimatization Period

The adaptation period for full dentures is much longer than the adaptation period for implant-supported dentures. Full dentures are a major psychological trauma, especially for people who have never used full dentures before, and they create an uncomfortable sensation in the mouth when first worn. Getting used to the lower full denture is usually more difficult and takes more time than getting used to the upper full denture. This is because the tongue in the mandible has a negative effect on the movement of the prosthesis. Patients with full dentures also have difficulties during speech. They may feel that their tone of voice changes when vocalizing words. Over time, the patient will adapt to issues such as speech, language and movements.

Especially our patients who have no teeth have a big problem when they want to make a plucking movement with their front teeth. Because when the front side of the prosthesis is pressed, the back moves and the prosthesis may dislodge.

Removing the prosthesis at night

Removing the prosthesis at night relieves the oral mucosa but may cause loss of the habit of wearing the prosthesis. Re-insertion in the morning may create a feeling of excess in the mouth. For this reason, it is a preferred method to remove full dentures on certain days of the week instead of removing them every day.

Full dentures, which are the most difficult to use and difficult to get used to among removable prostheses, offer more comfortable use thanks to implant support today. Two to four implants can be placed in the upper jaw to ensure the retention of the prosthesis.

Two implants in the lower jaw are usually sufficient for the retention of the prosthesis. Depending on the density of the jawbone and the length and diameter of the implants, the number of implants can be increased to four if possible. Since Hazal bone is softer, full dentures are preferred and recommended, especially for the upper jaw.
